I remember the night my husband proposed to me just like it was yesterday.

It was nothing fancy as I am not the fancy type. We were having a college study group at a mutual friend’s apartment on the campus of Washington State University.

I was busy preparing a Bible study for the college group we were a part of when Michael came over to me and asked me to marry him.

And of course, I said yes. I loved that it caught me off guard that it was simple and low-key. For me, it was perfect. We were engaged in October of 1999 and married in June of 2000.

And during those 8 months of our engagement, there is one habit that we formed together that I believe has been a key component to keeping our marriage strong: Scripture memorization.

Michael and I have watched as God has done miraculous things in our marriage as a by-product of hiding God’s Word in our hearts.

Today I want to share with you four of the many ways Scripture memory can help build a strong marriage!

1. Bible verses for married couples: it  changes your heart and keeps you humble.

There is no denying that we all need to eat a piece of humble pie every now and then. And it is through God’s Word that we are able to see the true intent of our heart – which is a very humbling process.

Through our 17+ year Scripture memorization journey together we have watched the Lord show us who we really are, giving us the power to change the behaviors that are not pleasing to Him.

This is an important part of every marriage because in order to remain humble you must continue to look deep into your heart and be willing to change.

2. It gives you the power to carry out God’s will for your marriage.

Without God’s Word we are powerless to change or walk in His will. However, God tells us in Hebrews 4:12 (NLT):

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

Did you see that? Wow! God’s Word is so powerful it can give us the wisdom to differentiate between soul and spirit – exposing our innermost thoughts and desires!

This means that by memorizing God’s Word with your spouse, you will be able to walk in His power and see one another for who you really are.

This has been a huge blessing in our 16+ years of marriage and continues to lead us into His truth and design for marriage.

3. Memorizing Scripture as a couple plants seeds of love and hope to draw on later.

I cannot count how many times I’ve been able to draw on the well of God’s Word in my heart in times of trouble.

I can attest to the fact if I hadn’t committed my heart to Scripture memory all those years ago – I would likely have caused a lot of irreversible damage to my marriage.

Thankfully God had my back and the seeds of obedience that were planted by memorizing His Word carry me into His love and hope when tests and trials come about in my marriage.

I have no doubt that as my husband and I continue to memorize Scripture together that we will continue to flourish in our marriage planting the wisdom for tomorrow with each new verse we commit to memory.

4. It allows you and your spouse to have an unbreakable bond.

The beautiful thing about memorizing God’s Word with your spouse is that it guarantees that God is in the midst of everything you do.

You can rest in knowing that your bond is unbreakable if you allow God to be the center at all times while submitting to one another in His love.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NLT) says

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

This verse alone has given my husband and I the confidence in knowing that our marriage union will be ’til death do us part as long as we allow God to be the crux of our covenant.

Memorization Scripture as a couple is a powerful tool in building a strong Christ-focused marriage. By having God’s Word stored up in your hearts, you and your spouse will be able to make it through the trials that come your way simply because God is with you and will direct your steps.

Scripture memory, when coupled with prayer and obedience can create a marriage bond like no other. I encourage you to begin memorizing God’s Word with your spouse today – I know that you will see many wonderful changes as a result!

Ngina here: One of the things I love about Matters of the Heart is it’s “do-ability”. Most of us are busy-birds and unfortunately, we use busyness as a excuse not to commit more Scripture to memory. At just one scripture a week, Matters of the heart makes it easy. No more excuses!
