Two Powerful Keys to Help You Pray For Your Husband More Often

| |

How often do you pray for your husband?

Every day? Three times a week? Occasionally? Never?

Well, no matter how often you pray, I believe we all need encouragement to help us better pray for our husbands.

Sometimes back, I heard a pastor talk about his prayer life. He said, “my wife is the first person I pray for whenever I pray.”

How often do you pray for your husband? For many wives, the answe is not often enough. Here are two keys to help you pray for your husband more often

That statement hit somewhere because at that time my husband wasn’t the first person I prayed for whenever I prayed. Nothing wrong with prioritizing other areas but I did want to pray for my husband more often.

So I thought that making a habit of praying for my husband before praying for other needs guaranteed I’d pray for him more often.

(And this article applies to husbands too! If you’re a man reading this, swap out “husband” with “wife”.)

Multitask or pray for your husband

Many women are multi-taskers – we have long-do lists. In fact, we have more tasks on the list than we can humanly perform. So a lot of things simply go undone.

So imagine the same mindset in our prayer life.

You have more things to pray for during your dedicated time of prayer than you can actually get around to praying for.

Unfortunately, your beloved doesn’t occupy the top spot on your list.; your “pressing needs” like finances, work, your sick friend, your mom do.

So by the time you think about your husband, it’s already time to wrap up your prayer time.

Your beloved, who resides on #6 on your list of prayer priorities rarely gets prayed for. Or when he’s prayed for, it’s a rushed affair.

But what amazing results when make this small tweak to your prayer life! It has been an exciting new habit to grow into.

Some of the best prayers I have prayed for my husband have been Scripture prayer.

There’s nothing more powerful than praying the Word of God over your husband because the Word of God is the will of God.

This week I have a simple challenge for you.

  1. Change up your prayer time – move your husband up the list of intercession prayers. Make him #1
  2. Begin the habit of scripture prayer for your husband.

One of my favorite scripture to pray over my husband is Ephesians 3:16-21. Here’s how it would look like, personalized.

Father, I pray that from Your glorious, unlimited resources You will empower (insert the name of your husband) with inner strength through Your Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in his heart as he trusts in Him.

(Insert husband’s name) roots will grow down into Your love and keep him strong. I pray that he will have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is.

I pray that he will experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then he will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from You.

Now all glory to You, our God, because you are able, through Your mighty power at work within him, to accomplish infinitely more than he might ask or think.

All glory to You in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.

As you pray through the scripture and depending on what is going on in his life, you might be impressed to pray over specific areas more deeply.

For example, as you read verse 16, “My husband’s roots will grow down into Your love and keep him strong,” you might consider areas of his life where his strength is currently being challenged. Get specific and talk to God about that situation.

Whenever I pray like this, I end up covering areas that wouldn’t have otherwise crossed my mind.

Hebrews 4:12 reminds us “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

The cool thing about praying Scripture is that you do so anytime and any place!

I look at Scripture and turn it over in my mind while standing in the grocery line, sitting at a doctor’s office, at the back of an Uber – pretty much anywhere.

And you can do the same! That way, there’s no excuse if you missed praying for him in your regular prayer time. Simply grab the snippets of time you have during the day to read and pray Scripture over your beloved.
